Thank you for your interest regarding the Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages Office Information and Procedures. Our Office preserves and records property transactions for all 22 municipalities within the County. We exemplify accountability to you by providing courteous, prompt, professional service in compliance with the New Jersey Open Public Records Act (OPRA).

The Office affects any person who has owned, owns or sold property in the County as well as resides in the County. A copy of every deed and mortgage recorded since 1637 is on file in the Register's Office. These documents are preserved in the Record Room, an area of the Office that is open to interested citizens, attorneys, title searchers, historians and genealogists for their research, reference and study.

We also maintain documents pertaining to mortgages and transactions for liens, foreclosures and mortgage cancellations. The Office also, proudly, records honorable discharges for veterans. Vault services are open to the public by appointment only.
Services
The office of Deeds and Mortgages was founded to undertake the transfer of ownership of real estate.
For a long time in the 16th century, the transfer of property was done by documents handwritten and stored by clerks.
In 1683, a law was created that required all deeds to be recorded in a public registry or they were voided.
The maintenance of those records was considered supplemental to the clerk's job, which was to attend to the courts before attending to its citizens.
The constitution of 1844 read that "Clerks and surrogates of counties shall be elected by the people of their respective counties for a five-year term."
You should check your deed and mortgage index periodically to ensure continuity with official records in the Register's Office.
This Office abides by the Open Public Records Act (OPRA), which is the State's Statue which governs the public's access to government records in New Jersey.
If you misplaced or lost your original deed, you can purchase your own certified copies from the Register's Office without the use of a third party.
The Record Room is the repository for copies of all legal documents which have been recorded within the County since its creation in 1637.
The public has access rights to these documents and are permitted to make searches.
The records are available for public inspection between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
By law, staff cannot conduct a title search, although upon request, the staff will familiarize the public with the indexing method and demonstrate how to use the books and computers.
Please email sharper@essexregister.com to set an appointment for Vault services.
If you are a title searcher, and are not on the scheduled list, please call in advance to schedule a time and date to come in.
Effective immediately the Office of the Essex County Register of Deeds & Mortgages will be suspending all non-essential services which include all walk-in and counter services at our window and vault until further notice.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
